Facebook Launches U.S. Military Page (and you can Like Patriot Surplus, too!)

US Military Facebook PageFacebook has launched the official U.S. Military Page!

Officially billed as a way to bring together “resources and information to help those in the service, their families, and veterans”, the new U.S. Military Facebook page is all about keeping you connected and informed.

The page, which went live a couple weeks ago, features a few interactive components that are great ways to show your support for the troopes. There’s a Give Thanks component where users can enter in messages of thanks to the troops while reading through some of the other messages left by fans.

Looking for a job? There’s also a Career Resources component built into the page to help veterans find employment through BranchOut and Military.com.

All in all, it’s a great page to add to your favorites if you like to hang out on Facebook. You can like the page: http://www.facebook.com/USMilitary.

We’ve been busy at Patriot Surplus.

In addition to putting together some A-MAZING Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday deals, we’ve also been busy making video reviews of some of our latest and greatest gear.

Marine Corps Celebrating 236th Birthday

AmericaThe world’s finest are celebrating a big moment today. In fact, it’s so big that it’s been celebrated since 1921 with more than just a few candles.

In that year, the famous 13th Commandant, Gen. John A. Lejeune issued Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 1921. This order summarized the history, tradition, and mission of the Marine Corps in such a way that all Marines are to be read this reminder every year to honor the founding of the Marine Corps. But this day is not just about honoring the Marines. It’s about celebrating.

Back in the 20’s, Marine barracks around the country started staging formal dances in honor of the occasion. Over the years, that Birthday Ball has grown to take on a life of its own, complete with cake-cutting ceremonies and other traditional observances, like the presentation of the first and second pieces of cake to the oldest and youngest Marines present. I mean, c’mon. Marines know how to party.

Looking to celebrate the Marine Corps birthday this year? Here are a few ideas:

  • Send a birthday box or care package to a Marine you know.
  • Encourage students to get in on the occasion by volunteering to speak about the United States Marine Corps at a local school. Organize activities, such as a parade or presentation, to make this day a memorable event for all ages.
  • Wear your favorite Marine Corps t-shirt or hat. It’s a simple gesture, but one that sends a clear message.
  • Throw a birthday party for the Marine Corps at homes. Invite over your fellow veterans and let the party begin. Semper Fidelis, brothers.

U.S. Marine Sets Bench Press World Record

A United States Marine recently lifted his way into the record books. His nickname? The Beast.

Sgt. David Douglas made history in July when he set a new world record at the U.S. Powerlifting Association Open in the 308-pound class by bench-pressing a staggering 738.5 pounds. The Marine, who weighs in at 272 pounds and is 6 feet tall, is a member of the U.S. Marine Corps Barbenders.

When he accomplished the feat, Sgt. Douglas was interviewed by a variety of news media asking what his weight lifting record compared to. His answer: it’s comparable to lifting a small elephant.

“People were really pattingme on the back,” Douglas told a Fox station in San Diego. “And (making) little jokes here and there about, ‘Can you pick up my car if I have a flat tire?’”

Sgt. Douglas started weightlifting professionally back in 2006 while he was stationed in Japan. Today, he’s coached by Sabrina Gibson and works out six times per week around his regular duties as a mechanic for the 2st Maintenance Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group.

Sgt. Douglas also recently competed at the Mr. Olympia Professional Powerlifting Competition in Las Vegas, where his goal was the bench press a staggering 800 pounds. He didn’t quite make his goal, but he got close: 755 pounds. Still, that’s an amazing performance of strength.

As for his next big goal, Sgt. Douglas says he’s looking to just attract more attention to the sport. As he told one interviewer:

“I hope by stuff like this, that they will see powerlifting is a sport, not only in the outside world, but in the Marine Corps as well, and we have Marine Corps athletes that can do the same,” Douglas said. “I would really love to do powerlifting as a career, and I love being a Marine, so if that can go hand-in-hand, as long as I can ride that, I will.”
