Did you know that many states allow for open carry of a hand gun? In fact there are only seven states that outright prohibit open carry of a side arm. The laws in the United States regarding open carry of handguns vary by state. The following is the full list of open carry states and the conditions attached.

If you know us, you know that we have an appreciation for those who perform extraordinary feats – and do so with swagger. Badasses may be plentiful, but there are a few that stand out in our mind as some of the coolest people on the planet. These are the guys – living or dead – that we would LOVE to outfit. Seriously. How awesome would it be if any of these guys wore our gear?
Here are some serious badasses who we’d love to outfit.
Joseph Teti: Of “Dual Survival” fame, Joseph Teti is a veteran of the US military and the US government special operations units, or more specifically, a former Force Recon Marine, Army Special Forces Green Beret and a former operator in a highly classified government counter-terrorist. He’s a soldier and a survivalist, so naturally, he’s high on our list of people we’d love to grab a beer with. Joseph, we know you’d love our MultiCam and A-TACS gear. Please, please, please. Call us.
Teddy Roosevelt: Who GOT SHOT while giving a speech – and FINISHED THE SPEECH? You’re damn right that our 26th President did. In 1912 while campaigning, Roosevelt was shot in the chest. The bullet passed through a thick copy of his speech and his steel eyeglass case and was lodged about 3 inches into his chest muscle. Concluding that it couldn’t be that bad because he wasn’t coughing blood, he chose to speak for 90 minutes – then went to the hospital where it was discovered that they couldn’t safely remove the bullet. He carried it with him for the rest of his life. His opening comments? ”Ladies and gentlemen, I don’t know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot; but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose.” Add in the Rough Riders, the boxing, and the Ron Swanson-esque mustache and you’ve got one of the biggest badasses in history. Mr. President, we think you need a nice, sturdy pair of ass-kicking boots. We recommend a classic, like Danner boots, for you, Teddy.
Steve McQueen: He wasn’t called “The King of Cool” for nothing. Steve McQueen was best known for flicks like Bullitt, The Getaway, Papillon, The Towering Inferno, The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape and The Thomas Crown Affair, not to mention, the TV series Wanted: Dead or Alive where he played a bounty hunter. He competed in off-road motorcycle racing, collected classic motorcycles, and considered becoming a professional race car driver. Oh yeah, and there’s that ridiculously awesome Ford Mustang GT 390 from Bullitt, too. For Steve McQueen, we’d love to suit him up in one of our sweet Alpha leather jackets. He’d make this already cool staple even cooler.
Have another badass you’d like to recommend we outfit? Leave us a comment!
This recent cold snap in the Northeast got us thinking about how dangerous it can be to spend too much time in cold weather. But what happens if you’re forced to? Here at Patriot Surplus, we have a variety of warm and durable winter gear items to help you brave the cold this winter season. But you need more than just the right outdoor winter gear. You also need to know how to keep your wits about you when cold weather strikes.
The first thing you need to know is that there are many health hazards that come along with the cold weather. We’re not just talking about a red runny nose, either. You should know how to recognize and treat, frostnip, frostbite and hypothermia. Some of these cold weather-induced maladies can be fatal in very extreme cases.
Frostbite is recognized when the skin begins to turn gray or white and takes on a waxy texture—it may even look frozen. Frostnip involves white patches of skin that are numb. Other symptoms can include blistering, swelling, and deep pain the rewarming process.
Important tip: DO NOT pour hot water on frostbitten body parts or expose frostbitten skin to heaters, fireplaces, etc. as these heat sources can actually cause tissue damage. Instead, get out of the cold, warm the entire body, remove any wet clothing and replace with dry. Seek professional medical help when dealing with frostbite at any point! Wrap affected areas, keep warm and wait. To gradually warm frostnip affected fingers, put them on your stomach or under your armpits. The key to dealing with frostbite or frostnip (its precursor), is to rewarm the affected areas slowly while avoiding rubbing. Again – seek professional medical help if you’re experiencing frostbite.
Hypothermia is indicated by drops in body temperature, uncontrolled shivering, confusion and delusion. When your body drops below 95 degrees F, it becomes incredibly dangerous and damaging for your body’s systems. To treat, the first step is to get out of the cold, then, gradually warm the body back up, starting with your trunk – not your hands and feet. Remove wet clothing and replace with dry. Wrap your body in blankets – do not take a hot bath or hot shower, as the shock can cause arrhythmia. Seek medical attention.
The key in these cold weather survival concerns is preparation.
Wearing the right clothing is one of the most important things when it comes to the cold. Your goal should be to cover as much exposed skin as possible—from head to toe. Layer your clothing. Wool is a great insulator, and you can find the ideal wool garments right here at Patriot Surplus. Make sure you start off with base layers that can wick moisture away from the body while also preserving body heat. Proper footwear, outerwear, and accessories are going to be key – you need to keep your body warm and dry.
Bonus tip: Try to have a change of dry clothes ready at any given moment during the cold weather. This is one of the most important things you can do.

These are the traits we think of when we hear the name, “Rambo”. But wait a second. What if Rambo was shopping for boots? I mean, c’mon. If Rambo REALLY needed boots, you know he’s probably just fashion them out of a wild boar. He’d tan that hide with the fury of a 1,000 suns and stitch pure fear, yes, FEAR, into the insole. But hey, sometimes even the greatest of heroes can appreciate convenience offered by ready to wear military boots.
If Rambo were shopping for military boots, we think these would be the tips he’d follow:
Choose boots that accentuate your ridiculous muscles. They don’t have to fit big or be physically big, but they need to LOOK big. Have them match the guns or whatever. You’re going into battle – and you need to look good, dammit. Choose something with a bit of style, you know? You can go for the classic jungle boot or bring your ass kicking into the 21st century with some of the latest military boots from Belleville, Altama, or Converse. Oh, and don’t forget about Rocky boots either.
Choose boots that fit well. If you’re going out into the jungle to battle a terrorist threat, you need a pair of boots that can keep up with you. Find a pair that’s not too tight and not too lose, and most importantly, comfortable, something you can walk in for days if needed. Take advantage of comfort features built into the boot and state of the art footwear technology. Trust us – a good pair of boots can go a long way. Luckily, we have plenty of boots to choose from so you can always find the best pair. Plus, if you’re not sure on sizing or the way these boots feel and fit, you can always consult our product descriptions or give us a shout. We’ll let you know what you can expect from your boots.
Choose boots that can tackle the terrain. The jungle or the Pacific Northwest. It’s all the same to you. You need boots that can tackle the terrain and be made just for you and whatever sort of trouble you like to get yourself in. When shopping for boots, take a closer look at the features built in to the boot to make sure you’re getting one that can keep up. Pay attention to things like tread, strength, venting, waterproofing, resistance to blood borne pathogens, and abrasion resistance.
You’re one man, but you can take out an army. At Patriot Surplus, we’ll make sure you have the right boots to do it.
Check out the military boots in our selection. Not sure what Rambo would pick? Well, you can always send us a message or give us a call and we can guide you toward the perfect pair. We’re veterans too, and although we may not look like Stallone, we know our boots.
At Patriot Surplus, we’ve got knives for just about anything. Hunting, survival, military service…you name it and we’ve probably got a knife that can keep you prepared for just about anything. As for sizes and styles, let’s just say we have a full range, from the pocket knife to the machete. Just take a look at our knife selection and you’ll see what I mean.
What are the best knives we carry? Well, I tend to think it’s a matter of opinion. In my experience, I’ve never been let down by Smith and Wesson’s HRT series knives. They are pretty much up for any task. ASEK survival knives are popular among those who serve and collectors appreciate our GI pilot survival knives and genuine British Commando knives. Those who like the great outdoors think are machetes are badass (they are) and usually go for any of the military survival knives in our selection, which come with accessories that can get you through an emergency situation. My fellow Marines also know what it means to have a Ka-Bar USMC knife at your side. Oh yes, there’s nothing better for keeping a Marine prepared for anything than a Ka-Bar USMC knife.
Speaking of being prepared, we also have multitool sets and pocket tools in our knife selection that are great for carrying along anywhere. We have the classic Red Swiss Army Type knives, plus a few different Leatherman and Gerber compact muli-pliers and pocket tools that include everything from scissors to screwdrivers. Stow them in your bag, car, or office. You never know when you might need them.
Man, we suck at this whole posting on time thing – and we were really excited about this one too! So here’s what happened. In all of the hustle and bustle of getting in our new collection of Magnum boots (more on that later), we forgot to put up our April Fool’s post. We’re sorry, patriots. We spaced on this one.
Without further ado, here’s the April Fool’s post that was supposed to go live on April 1st – but didn’t. Hey, it’s 4/11 – that’s kind of close, right? Double ones? *crickets*
Now, we all know that we want to be prepared for any situation. After all, you never know what could happen. These are crazy times we’re living in and if those Mayan calendar people are right, we’ve got a lot to be thinking about. In preparation for the impending zombie apocalypse, Patriot Surplus has been busy readying our strategy for making it out alive. That’s right. We’re about to get all kinds of Bruce Campbell up in here.
Zombies are a different kind of challenge. Whether they choose to reanimate based on radioactive spills or some weird genetically engineered virus, there’s one thing for certain: these are not the kinds of house guests you want busting up your BBQ. These are tough creatures, so it takes time, planning, and preparation to ensure that you make it out alive. Trust us – when a zombie arrives at your door, you better have that bug out bag packed and ready to go.
When the zombie apocalypse strikes, you need to be ready with all of the survival essentials. Now, we’re not sure how long it’ll take for you to find a farm, compound, camp, or community of other survivors, but we recommend that you pack enough for at least a few days. Thankfully, Patriot Surplus has your back with our selection of zombie survival gear.
Now, I know what you’re thinking:
“Steve, this is the friggin’ zombie apocalypse – how will I EVER be prepared for that?”
Don’t worry. The crew at Patriot Surplus has had plenty of time to think about how to gear up for an occasion like this. Sure, we know how to handle extreme weather conditions and unique terrain, but don’t think for a minute we haven’t considered what you’d need in the event of the undead (and we’re not talking Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” kind of undead. Serious undead. The Walking Dead undead.) Survival is all about having the necessities, no matter what conditions you’re under. So, when it comes to escaping these creatures and making it to a safe haven, we’ve got the gear you need to take care of the basics without weighing you down. After all, you’re going to be on the move.
To get you started, we have an awesome selection of Maxpedition and MOLLE bags that are perfect for acting as the base for your bug out bag or zombie survival kit. Once you’ve got the right bag, you’ll want to toss in your basic tools, a mess kit, first aid kit, fire starters, weapons (choose wisely – previous experience shows that everything from old records to axes can work in your favor), MRE meals, a water treatment kit, flashlight, batteries, radios, and of course, a military survival guide or two. Before you zip things up, you may want to do a quick web search for zombie survival tips and print those out too. Depending on the unique type of zombie you’re dealing with, you may need to read up on how to take down these bastards.
Once you’ve got your bag packed with zombie survival essentials from Patriot Surplus, stash it in a place that’s easily accessible for when you’re on the move. Hell, you may even want to keep spares in your car, garage, office, or at a friend’s house. The minute you hear the word “brrraaaaiiiinnnns”, lace up your Magnum boots and book it. It’s time to go.
Alright, patriots. Gear up. Check out our survival gear for the zombie apocalypse and start planning your escape route. You never can be too prepared.
Sometimes, there’s just nothing more exciting than taking on unknown terrain. Sure, it might be charted and all, but there’s just something so awesome about being set loose in the great outdoors. It’s a challenge that far too few appreciate and it’s something we’re passionate about. After all, what’s life without a little adventure? We know our customers have a taste for adventure, which is why we’ve put together a great selection of survivalist gear to help you stay equipped for your next outing.
Take for instance our paracord and climbing and rapelling gear. We have utility cord, parachute cord, carabiners, ascenders, climbing robes, and harnesses that are great for keeping up with you, no matter where you’re going. Paracord is awesome to have on hand in a variety of surivial situations and can be broken down for a ton of different uses, including use as fishing line or to repair broken gear. Just toss a 50 or 100 foot bundle into your camping or outdoor gear bag and you’re good to go.
Carabiners and climbing harnesses can also make it easy for you to explore some of the more challenging types of terrain on your adventure. Scale cliffs, climb mountains, and see the world from a view that few people get to see. There’s just nothing better when you’re taking advantage of the outdoors.
But besides paracords and climbing equipment, we also have some survivalist essentials that keep you prepared for any situation. Here are a few of our favorites:
Survival Knives: Made by top brands like Smith & Wesson, our survival knife kits offer the essentials for when you need to survive in the wild. Some survival knife kits include fishing line, hook, sinkers, bandages, signal mirrors, compasses, fire starters, or sewing needles.
Survival Blankets: Lightweight and designed to reflect a high percentage of your body heat, survival blankets give you an edge when it comes to defending yourself from the elements. Keep one packed in your emergency bag or outdoor gear bag just in case.
Survival Manuals and Books: In our selection of military manuals, we’re proud to carry several variations of the classic military issue survival manual, so feel free to peruse and keep one handy for when you’re taking on Mother Nature.
Count in our selection of military apparel, military bags, and kick ass boots and you’re ready for anything. But hey, we knew that already. We’re just giving you the right gear.
